Creative Arts Workshops for Adults
The City of North Charleston's Cultural Arts Department invites adults to participate in Creative Arts Workshops held on the fourth Saturday of each month from 10:00am-12:00pm at The Olde Village Community Building in the Olde Village area of North Charleston (4820 Jenkins Avenue). Each interactive workshop is led by a different local artist and provides participants with a unique opportunity to learn new techniques in a relaxed atmosphere. Varying skill levels are welcome and the cost is $15, which includes most materials. Registrations are accepted starting the first of the month and close 2 days prior to the workshop. January 28, 2017 ● All About Wire-Jewelry Making with Michelle Rose ● Participants will learn wirework jewelry making techniques under the instruction of Michelle Rose. The basics of designing and beading your own earrings and rings will be covered. Michelle is a “Jill of All Trades," with experience as a jeweler, fashion designer, makeup artist, set designer, stylist, and teacher.
February 25, 2017 ● Creating Texture with Acrylic & Cold Wax with Caroline Self ● The City of North Charleston's 2016/17 Artist-in-Residence, Caroline Self, will lead participants through an exploration of texture in painting. Students will work with a cold wax medium and acrylic paint on a canvas board to create texture using a variety of techniques.
March 25, 2017 ● Pom Poms & Tassels with Camela Guevara ● Under the direction of local textile artist Camela Guevara, participants will learn how to make tassels and pom poms with multicolored yarn, as well as pictorial pom poms. These fun fiber pieces can be combined to make garlands, mobiles, bouquets, accents for gift wrapping, and more!
April 22, 2017 ● Sweetgrass Basket Weaving with Sarah Hammond ● Learn the basics of the historical art form of sweetgrass basket weaving with Sarah Edwards Hammond.Hammond began learning this unique form of art from her mother at the age of seven and works to pass on the tradition to her own children, grandchildren and others in the community.
May 27, 2017 ● Intro to Pastel with Trish Emery ● Trish Emery, founder of the Pastel Society of South Carolina, will introduce participants to a variety of drawing techniques using chalk pastel. For beginners and those who already love to draw.
June 24, 2017 ● Shibori Dyed Scarves with Kristy Bishop ● Local textile artist and natural dye specialist Kristy Bishop will instruct participants in different Shibori dyeing techniques such as binding, folding, and stitching. The final product will be a silk scarf dyed using one or a combination of techniques.
