Creative Arts Workshops for Adults
The City of North Charleston's Cultural Arts Department invites adults to participate in Creative Arts Workshops held on the fourth Saturday of each month from 10:00am-12:00pm at The Olde Village Community Building in the Olde Village area of North Charleston (4820 Jenkins Avenue). Each interactive workshop is led by a different local artist and provides participants with a unique opportunity to learn new techniques in a relaxed atmosphere. Varying skill levels are welcome and the cost is $15, which includes most materials. Registration opens the first day of the month that the workshop takes places and closes two days prior to each workshop. Space is limited. July 22, 2017 ● Intro to Weaving with Kelly Finn ● Local arts educator and founder of Art Box Fun, Kelly Finn will teach adult participants the basics of weaving along with various techniques to enhance the weaving. The result will have a wide range of uses from a woven coaster to a trendy wall hanging. Come learn a new skill or improve an existing one!
August 26, 2017 ● Lino-Cut Prints with Kristen Solecki ● Learn about the art of relief printing and how to make your own block print from local artist and illustrator Kristen Solecki. Adult participants will turn their original drawings into prints by carving them out of linoleum then printing them onto paper with ink. Each student will make a set of black and white prints. Feel free to bring sketches of what you would like to print.
September 23, 2017 ● Needle Felting: Creating Decorative Spheres with Sage Graham ● Designer, artist, and puppet maker Sage Graham will offer step-by-step instruction on how to approach needle felting. Adult participants will create a felted sphere a variety of colored wools.
October 28, 2017 ● Drawing Perspective with Meyriel Edge ● Perspective simplified! Join local artist and former art educator, Meyriel Edge for a hands-on lesson on the basic rules of 2-point perspective and shading. Adult participants will draw an imaginative scene - maybe a sophisticated city, a magical fairy garden, a collection of blocks and cylinders, the choice is yours! No previous drawing experience is necessary.
November 18, 2017 (3rd Saturday due to Thanksgiving) ● Polymer Clay Jewelry with Shannon Tabor ● Join jewelry designer Shannon Tabor of Charleston Clay Jewelry for a fun introduction to the medium of polymer clay. Tabor will teach adult participants the proper handling of the clay, precision cutting techniques, color blends, preventing bubbles, and how to create a smooth and even finish. Attendees will leave with their own piece of polymer clay jewelry.
